in the cyberpunk 2077 universe.
Beginnings
Valerie “V” Sakurai was born in Tokyo, Japan before her parents relocated to Night City while she was an infant. V was raised in a corporate family in Charter Hill, Night City while also frequently traveling back to Japan for family matters.Born into the heart of corporate power in Japan, V experienced a childhood marked by the duality of privilege and exposure to the gritty reality of Night City. Her family's relocation to the urban labyrinth was a pivotal moment, initiating her into greater cultural exposure. From an early age, V maintained excellent grades and exhibited a natural aptitude for technology, finding fascination in the interconnected web of the digital realm. She was a bit rebellious at times, but knew when to tone it down. Childhood days were spent immersed in the world of codes and networks, fueling her dream of becoming a netrunner.Frequent trips to Japan for family matters provided V with a blend of cultural richness and corporate intricacies. These journeys instilled in her a sense of duality, navigating the corporate values of her family against the cold, neon-lit landscape of Night City.V's childhood, shaped by corporate expectations and a passion for technology laid the foundation for a future where she'd weave through the shadows of both her family's expectations and the chaotic city she called home.
Teenage Years And Training
V's introduction to the world of netrunning took a disciplined and professional turn as a teenager through the guidance of a trusted family friend, Asami Nakamoto. Employed by Arasaka, Asami's expertise was instrumental in honing V's technological prowess even further.Their interactions were marked by a strictly professional demeanor. V, driven by an insatiable curiosity and will to learn, absorbed Asami's teachings with disciplined focus. Late nights turned into early mornings as Asami imparted the intricacies of netrunning within the teenager.Asami's commitment to V's education went beyond the call of duty, weaving a bond built on mutual respect and a shared dedication to netrunning. Their connection remained loyal and unclouded by personal motives, creating a foundation of trust and friendship between the two.As V's skills and intelligence flourished under Asami's tutelage, she became a potentially valuable asset within the corporate framework. This professional alliance not only sculpted V into a formidable netrunner but also instilled in her a steadfast loyalty to Arasaka, who had already developed an interest in her.
Arasaka
At the age of eighteen, after her parents returned to Japan, V officially enlisted into the Arasaka Corporation, being trained in creating and maintaining intelligence networks, crisis impact analysis, and establishing defense of corporate assets in the event of armed conflict. With V possessing excellent netrunning skills from her previous private training, Arasaka made sure their new agent was also trained in actual combat. V was trained with most weapons as was the standard with Arasaka, but showed skills with blades and pistols. Paired with her netrunning abilities, she was a formidable operative.During her time in the company, V caught an Arasaka sales department employee spying for Petrochem. The official story was that he slipped in the shower and died. The truth is that he was V's first kill. Afterwards, V got a promotion and a promise that she would not have to dirty their hands for a while. Her superior, Arthur Jenkins, was a big reason V was a high ranking counterintelligence operative agent in the Arasaka Tower of Night City.Over a five-year period of active duty, V completed six defensive and five offensive operations. Her last assignment was a full reconnaissance of an Arasaka facility in Watson, which led to tracking and intercepting a spy from Baskin Undercover Inc, who was suspected to have been working under Militech orders. With that mission, V proved she was an effective autonomous operative; clever and ambitious, she was always committed to completing the assignments and never showed disloyalty to Arasaka. However, she showed high levels of stress.
Fall From Grace
During the Frankfurt leak, Jenkins was tasked with dealing with the situation after assassinating a number of ESC epresentatives without the official approval of his superior, Susan Abernathy. V was tasked by Jenkins to assassinate Abernathy, who he claimed had stolen his position. V called her street contact and old friend Jackie Welles to meet at Lizzie’s Bar.While there V discussed the details of the job, however Jackie was unwilling to do it, and did not want V to go through with it either. During the conversation, the two were cornered by Arasaka agents under Abernathy's command, they stripped V of her corporate status and took the information regarding Jenkins. They attempted to bring in V as well, but relented after being threatened by Jackie. V lamented that her life was effectively over, However Jackie claimed that she was in fact finally free of the corporate world. He then allowed V to stay at his home until she got back on her feet. Her abrupt end with Arasaka left her bitter and disillusioned with the corporation, but a lifetime in the corporate world provided her with extensive knowledge of the corps that would aid her as a mercenary.
And while being a merc isn’t how she envisioned living, V was perfect for the job and enjoyed her newfound freedom, making the absolute most of it. .
